A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way…

 In Reflections

“Remember, there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” —Scott Adams

On the website filled with photos to select from, this image of a young boy petting a cat with mom watching was titled “teaching kindness.” Learning to touch an animal gently and with tenderness may be one of the early introductions we get in the blessings for both the giver and receiver of an expression of kindness.

Thinking about the need to remember patience and kindness as Austin, in the “path of totality”, swells with guests eager to view next Monday’s eclipse, I remembered how good it felt to be on the receiving end of kindness from a dear friend.

“Friendships between women, as any woman will tell you, are built of a thousand small kindnesses…swapped back and forth and over again.” — Michelle Obama

Remembering to be kind in traffic, with drivers ahead of me clearly lost, is not something I succeed at as often as I’d like. This week I’m going to practice seeing these guests as friends I’m getting to know…one small act of kindness at a time.

When are you most challenged to be kind? Can you take a small step this week to send out a ripple of kindness and friendship in a similar situation? As Scott Adams says, “every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” Please join me in sending out lots of ripples this week.

May you bless others with kindness this week. And may the ripples your kindness sends out bless you in return.

Be Kind

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”
―Wendy Mass

Practice All Day

“Practice kindness all day to everybody and you will realize you’re already in heaven now.”
―Jack Kerouac

That Lives In Us

Last two stanzas:

Be kind to yourself, dear—to our innocent follies.
Forget any sounds or touch you knew that did not help you dance.
You will come to see that all evolves us.

If you put your heart against the earth with me, in serving
every creature, our Beloved will enter you from our sacred realm
and we will be, we will be
so happy.

—Rumi, Love Poems From God, Daniel Ladinsky
