A Moment to Reset…

 In Reflections

“We all get so caught up in the moment of what we’re doing every day, it’s hard to hit that reset button and get pulled away from all that and see life from a different perspective.” —Tony Stewart

Sometimes our inner voice speaks loudly, above the noise and chaos, to say “Quiet, quiet, please I need a moment of quiet.”

It’s as if this wise part of us understands, like racecar driver Tony Stewart suggests in the quote above, that we can get caught up in daily life and forget to stop and give ourselves the reset we need.

These stressful times we’re living in might require more moments of reset than you’re used to taking. From a walk in the woods to simply closing your eyes for a moment or two to take a deep breath and feel your feet on the ground, consider scheduling in a time to reset more often than you normally would.
“The brain has an attentional mode called the “mind wandering mode” that was only recently identified. This is when thoughts move seamlessly from one to another, often to unrelated thoughts, without you controlling where they go. This brain state acts as a neural reset button, allowing us to come back to our work with a refreshed perspective. Different people find they enter this mode in different ways: reading, a walk in nature, looking at art, meditating, and napping. A 15-minute nap can produce the equivalent of a 10-point boost in IQ.” —Daniel Levitin

While neuroscientist and psychologist Daniel Levitin emphasizes the benefits to our IQ in taking time to reset, I imagine research would also extoll its benefits to our overall wellbeing, sense of peace, and hope for the future. Why not take a 15-minute reset in whatever way works best for you and find out?

May you pause as often as you need to reset your system and may these pauses lead to precious moments of peace, clarity, and hope.

Fresh Start

“Hit the reset button. Whatever happened yesterday, forget about it. Get a new perspective. Today is a new day. Fresh start, begins now.”
— Germany Kent

Nature’s Support in Resetting…

“I usually head up to the mountains or out into the desert. Somewhere nobody is. There I can dig deep and find the core that got me where I am today. It’s sort of like my reset button.”
—Nathan Parsons

Sometimes

Sometimes
if you move carefully
through the forest

breathing
like the ones
in the old stories

who could cross
a shimmering bed of leaves
without a sound,

you come
to a place
whose only task

is to trouble you
with tiny
but frightening requests

conceived out of nowhere
but in this place
beginning to lead everywhere.

Requests to stop what
you are doing right now,
and

to stop what you
are becoming
while you do it,

questions
that can make
or unmake
a life,

questions
that have patiently
waited for you,

questions
that have no right
to go away.

David Whyte, from ‘Sometimes’ in DAVID WHYTE: ESSENTIALS

Sometimes our reset time leads to important questions, questions we may have been avoiding with all the noise and busyness of life. Wherever your time of reset leads you, we pray peace, clarity, and hope find you, your loved ones, and all those in need this week.
