Cathey Capers: Inspiration and Synchronicity

 In Return to Center

Hi friends, Cathey Capers here, and I just wanted to share a brief spiritual practice that I’ve been using recently to help me in these times. Basically, what I started doing since the New Year was using my journal, but you don’t necessarily need to have a journal. I just jot down any inspirations I have and any synchronicities that I notice.

An inspiration for me is something that just comes to me kind of out of the blue. Usually when I’m walking, maybe when I’m taking a shower or driving by myself, an idea or an insight will just arise. I go and note those down because they feel to me, inspired.

A synchronicity is something that feels like a signal or a message from me at a particular time. So, for example, one of the inspirations that I’ve had recently was to bring Valentines poems to some elders. So I wrote that down, and then before I could forget it, I was able to follow through on that because I went back and looked and I thought, Oh, that’s something I really want to do.

A synchronicity would be, for example, I ordered Chinese takeout recently and got a fortune cookie and it read, “Go to the elders when you feel a confidence crisis”. I actually taped it in my journal because I’m in the process of discerning whether I want to regularly do poetic medicine with elders with dementia.

So what this practice has done for me in these times is that it’s given me direction and it’s helped me to lead a more spirit led life.

I recently read on my meditation app. They provide quotes each day, and as I was thinking that this would be the practice I would share the quote for that very day said. “Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your head, be led by the dreams in your heart.” And that perfectly summarizes how this little practice of just noting synchronicities and inspirations is helping me.

So I hope it helps you to in this time of pandemic and beyond. Thank you all. Hope to see you soon.

My passion is at the intersection of poetry and contemplation. I enjoy being a Facilitator of Poetic Medicine for Eremos and populations who are somewhat marginalized and can especially benefit from healing poetry experienced in a trust worthy group.
