EREMOS Fall 2022 Book Reflection

Prayer in the Night
For Those Who Work or Watch or Weep

Tish Harrison Warren

“In our deepest moments of anxiety and darkness, we enter into this craft of prayer, often trembling and feeble. Most often, we take up prayer not out of triumphant victory or unimpeachable trust but because prayer shapes us; it works back on us to change who we are and what we believe.” – Tish Harrison Warren

Using the evening prayer of Compline as the framework for her personal and profound exploration of faith in times of doubt and struggle, Tish Harrison Warren offers thought-provoking insights into how the practice of prayer can serve as a light in the darkness.

But if God cannot be trusted to keep bad things from happening to us, how can he be trusted at all?”

Warren does not shy away from the tough questions she wrestled with in the night. Instead, she invites us into the conversation. Led by trusted facilitators, each group will support experiencing and reflecting upon Warren’s stories, theological perspective, and wisdom gained in community. Please join us!

Come with your unique spiritual beliefs and concerns and be open to the wisdom this Anglican Priest and New York Times columnist offers.

“Reading this book was like sitting with a friend who keeps watch in the night, reminding me of the patient presence of God.” –Andrew Peterson
