Small Moments of Connection…

 In Reflections

“We can do no great things―only small things with great love.” ― Mother Teresa

Who knew a commiserating laugh and smile over the intensity of the heat, followed by a packed-with-ice serving of hibiscus berry tea could be such a delightful moment of connection and care?

I can still taste the tea and feel the connection that young woman so graciously offered last Friday.

A willingness to laugh at myself in acknowledging how the heat this year is getting to me turned small, fleeting moments of conversation with grocery clerks, strangers, and baristas into memorable moments of connection.

Sometimes these simple moments are the surprisingly strong glue that keep us moving forward.

“Love blossoms virtually anytime two or more people—even strangers—connect over a shared positive emotion, be it mild or strong.” ― Barbara L. Fredrickson, Love 2.0

It turns out “small talk” has gotten a bad rap. When paired with a smile, laughter, or caring touch or eye-to-eye contact, these “micro-moments” can build into a strong thread of connection with others, leading to positive feelings of well-being.

How are you doing this summer? If you’re feeling isolated, depressed about world events, or worn down by the heat, consider making an effort to connect briefly with people you come into contact with. You just might arrive home a little bit lighter and better able to handle whatever comes next.

May you be blessed with many small, brief moments of connection that build a strong web of support to sustain you through trying times.

“No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted.”
―Aesop

The Orange

At lunchtime I bought a huge orange
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I had a half.

And that orange it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It’s new.

The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all my jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I’m glad I exist.
