Where the Light Begins…

 In Reflections

“Perhaps it takes a lifetime to open our eyes to learn to see what has forever shimmered in front of us….” —Jan Richardson, stanza from Where the Light Begins

As frustrating as it was to have the clouds blocking much of the view of the eclipse yesterday, having to wait and wonder what we would see made both the glimpses of the eclipse and the dimming and return of the light mesmerizing.

So, Jan Richardson’s beautiful blessing about the light felt perfect for sharing today. Whatever you saw of the eclipse yesterday, my prayer is that it elicited a time of awe for the light within and without that we so often take for granted.

“The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.”
―Ralph Waldo Emerson
May you be stretched and blessed by the light within and without revealing itself in new and amazing ways.

A Light Within

“There is a light within every soul; it only needs the clouds that overshadow it to be broken for it to beam forth.”
―Hazrat Inayat Khan

Within Your Eyes

“I salute the light within your eyes where the whole universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am at that place within me, we shall be one.”
―Crazy Horse

Where the Light Begins

Originally offered by Jan Richardson on Christmas Day, this blessing feels perfect after another time of wonder and awe witnessing the total eclipse.

Perhaps it does not begin.
Perhaps it is always.

Perhaps it takes
a lifetime
to open our eyes,
to learn to see
what has forever
shimmered in front of us—

the luminous line
of the map
in the dark

the vigil flame
in the house
of the heart

the love
so searing
we cannot keep
from singing,
from crying out
in testimony
and praise.

Perhaps this day
will be the mountain
over which
the dawn breaks.

Perhaps we
will turn our face
toward it,
toward what has been
always.

Perhaps
our eyes
will finally open
in ancient recognition,
willingly dazzled,
illuminated at last.

Perhaps this day
the light begins
in us.
